Literacy - (Please bring literacy tasks into school for me to mark)

Autumn

Activity 1 - Writing Task

Poetry Task – “Through a Child’s Eyes”

Write a poem that shows what it might have been like to be a child in wartime Britain.

  • You could describe an air raid, leaving home as an evacuee, or the kindness of strangers.
  • Use imagery, repetition, and powerful verbs/adjectives.
  • Try to capture feelings of fear, hope, and belonging.

Activity 2 - Reading Task

Login to HWB and click on the Britannica School App.  Search for Anne Frank and read about her life.  Answer the following questions.

🔍 Understanding & Inference

  1. Why do you think Anne chose to write her diary to an imaginary friend called “Kitty”?
  2. How might life in the Annex have affected the way Anne thought and felt about her family?
  3. What clues in the article show that Anne was hopeful even in difficult times?
  4. Why do you think the Franks trusted certain people to help them, even though it was very risky?
  5. How do you think Anne’s relationship with her diary helped her cope with hiding?

📖 Making Connections

  1. What are some similarities between Anne’s dreams for the future and your own?
  2. How is Anne’s story different from how most children grow up today?
  3. What lessons about kindness and bravery can we learn from the people who helped the families in hiding?
  4. What does Anne’s story tell us about how ordinary people were affected by the war?
  5. Why do you think the diary became more powerful than just a history book about the Holocaust?

🌍 Reflection & Evaluation

  1. If you could ask Anne one question about her time in hiding, what would it be and why?
  2. Do you think you would have managed to keep hopeful like Anne if you were in the Annex? Explain your answer.
  3. How would the world be different if Anne had survived the war and become a writer?
  4. Why do you think it is important to keep reading Anne’s diary today, even though the events happened over 75 years ago?
  5. If you had to explain Anne Frank’s story to someone your age who had never heard of her, what three words would you choose, and why?

Activity 3 - Oracy Task

Interview with the Past

Task:

  • Imagine you have travelled back to the 1940s. You are going to record (or rehearse and perform aloud at home) an interview with a WWII child.
  • Prepare 3–5 questions you would ask them (e.g. “What was the hardest part about leaving home?”, “Who looked after you when you were evacuated?”).
  • Then, practise performing both roles — the interviewer and the child.
  • Try to make the child’s answers detailed, showing conflict, compassion, and belonging.

Success criteria:

  • Clear, confident speaking voice.
  • Expressive tone to show feelings.
  • Imaginative, thoughtful answers.

Extension: Record your interview on a phone/tablet (if possible) and share on Seesaw.

  3. familly / family / fammily
  4. annex / anex / annnex
  5. diary / diarry / dieary

  3. She wrote (quiet / quietly) so she would not be heard.
  4. The diary (tell / tells) the story of her life in hiding.

Activity 5 - Handwriting

Read and copy the poem below in your best handwriting.  It is a poem about soldiers who died in the war.  The poppy is a symbol of remembrance.  Remember to size your letters correctly, space words evenly and remember to use capital letters and punctuation as you see them in the poem.  You could decorate the poem when you finish if you'd like.
